Why solid fat (or vegetable fat)?

Solid fat, such as oscewit (vegetable fat), has been a trusted element of Belgian frying culture for years. It:

  • ensures that fries stay crispy on the outside and soft on the inside
  • provides that unmistakable Belgian fry taste
  • has a higher smoke point than many liquid frying oils
  • uses less packaging waste compared to liquid fats

In short: if you fry with solid fat, you’re doing it the Belgian way!

Only the right fryer with fat-melting function

It’s important to know that you can’t just use any fryer. You need a fryer with a fat-melting function. FRITEL is the only manufacturer in Europe offering fryers with a patented fat-melting system, available in models such as the FRITEL Turbo SFR and FryTastic®.

Why is this so important?

  • It prevents overheating or flames when melting fat
  • It protects the heating element and thermostat
  • Your fat melts gradually and is made safely liquid

How to safely fry with solid fat – step by step

First use

  1. Cut the fat into pieces
  2. Place it in the fryer kettle on the heating element. Do not place fat between or above the heating element
  3. Use the fat-melting function
  4. Set the thermostat to the fat-melting symbol. Wait until the fat is completely liquid and transparent
  5. You can now fry!
  6. Set the thermostat to 180°C and bake your fries golden and crispy

Reuse

  1. Is the fat solidified? Carefully scrape it with a wooden spoon, never with metal
  2. Activate the fat-melting function again
  3. Enjoy perfectly crispy fries with full flavor

When to replace frying fat?

Is your fat dark, foaming, or does it smell rancid? Then it’s time to replace it.

How to do it:

  1. Melt the fat completely
  2. Pour it from the fryer into a heat-resistant container (never down the sink!)
  3. Wipe away leftover fat with kitchen paper
  4. Clean the fryer thoroughly with warm water and a little soap (never the control panel, unless detachable)

Then start again with fresh fat blocks as with first use.
